With Fuel Economy Gov the US Government in the form of the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) created a formidable free tool to give you energy saving ideas on your next vehicle.
So if you are in the market for a new or used car and since it will still take some time until we are all able to buy electrical or hydrogen powered vehicles, you should use this instrument.
Especially since the cost for Oil will be exploding soon (see the peak oil clock to the left, and already is very high.
And since for me it is established that we have reached Peak-Oil (every day from now on it gets harder to raise or even keep the rate of oil production) and that indications that we will get a small Ice-Age in the next years, you should prepare to save on Energy. Not too easy with Cars right now.

It is hard for cars because you can buy Solar Panels for your home etc., but you are not able to buy an Off-grid vehicle (for instance with self-made Hydrogen).
What you can do though is check out the homemade Biodiesel Centrifuge option. If you want to take advantage of that option, you have to buy a Diesel Vehicle.
And whatever option you choose, if you have or buy a Diesel or not, the Hydrogen Car Kit option for some reason is pretty unknown and works if all combustion engines used today.
So these would be the first and most important Vehicle Energy Saving Ideas.
At FuelEconomy.com you have several options.
First you can Compare Side by Side different cars sorted by model year.
I can see there that my Mercedes 260E has 19 MPG...well, the Hydrogen Car Kit will soon improve that...
With the Power Search you can make it show you all the cars that fit your description, so that you can choose the optimal car for your preferences.
On fueleconomy.gov you find also an overview about the actual Energy Tax Credit/Incentives in the US.
It also gives you a tool to find the cheapest gasoline prices in your area.
For conversion to UK standards you can use this calculator.
All in all a useful tool. My suggestion is as mentioned above: I recommend buying a (homemade) Biodiesel vehicle and check out Hydrogen Car Kits...Back from Fuel Economy Gov to Biodiesel Prcessors
